The Student Sustainability Committee is a group of 12 students dedicated to improving sustainability at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. With the help of 10 faculty and staff that serve as member-advisors, we meet to review and vote on what projects receive funding and check in on those projects that have already received funding. Using two student fees, the Sustainable Campus Environment Fee and the Cleaner Energy Technologies Fee, we review submitted projects and distribute funding to projects that we deem to be most beneficial to the University of Illinois. Both of these student fees bring in over $1.1 million annually, which is one of the largest sustainability fund of its kind in the United States.
Eligible projects must fit within the funding guidelines and criteria. Potential applicants are encouraged to meet with the committee’s working groups to discuss project ideas. We review submitted projects once per semester and the project applications are due at the beginning of each semester. Deadlines vary, please check the application section for more specific dates. Over 100 projects have been funded through the committee since its start, 10 years ago. If you are interested in learning more about the current committee or how to join please contact the committee.
Though SSC works with other groups on campus to promote sustainability, SSC primarily serves as a funding body. If you’re interested in more hands-on work in sustainability, we recommend you look into some of our peer organizations like Students for Environmental Concerns or the Green observer.
The Student Sustainability Committee (SSC) is a student-led organization charged with the distribution of two student fees – the Sustainable Campus Environment Fee and the Cleaner Energy Technologies Fee. With the ultimate goal of making the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign a leader in campus sustainability, SSC reviews, recommends, and funds projects that increase environmental stewardship, inspire change, and impact students.
The Student Sustainability Committee is governed by a set of bylaws that we review and revise as needed annually. Please click here for the latest version of the SSC Bylaws.
